Art Teaching Credential

The Academy of Art University offers three pathways toward teaching art in the classroom:

Pathway One
California Traditional Single Subject Credential in Art: The Traditional Single Subject Credential develops your skills and confidence in curriculum planning, teaching to various student needs and populations, and applying instructional strategies through a student teaching semester in a public K-12 Northern California school.

  • Track One – 18 Units: Recommended if you have completed your BFA in Art Education from the Academy of Art University.
  • Track Two – 30 Units: Recommended if you are new to the School of Art Education.

Pathway Two
California Internship Single Subject Credential in Art: The Internship Credential allows you to be a hired teacher of record in a California school district while you take your credential classes.

This option is for those who have found employment or are in the process of seeking employment with a public school district in California but do not yet have their credential.*

*The Internship Credential can be applied for while enrolled in the Traditional Credential or MAT in Art Education after prerequisite courses have been met.

Pathway Three
MAT in Art Education (California Single Subject Credential in Art AND masters degree): The master’s of art in teaching develops your skills in curriculum planning, teaching to various student needs and populations, and applying instructional strategies through a student teaching semester in a public K-12 Northern California school.

Your culminating Capstone Projects will consist of researching a topic and creating an advocacy video demonstrating the importance of Arts Education in today’s education system and creating a documentary of yourself as an Artist and Educator.

Apart from working in a public school, a master’s degree allows students to teach in museums, community programs, private schools, or at the community college level.

  • Track One – 27 Units: Recommended if you have completed your BFA in Art Education from the Academy of Art University.
  • Track Two – 39 Units: Recommended if you are new to the School of Art Education.

Art Teaching Credential Program

For students who aim to teach in California public schools, the BFA/Credential blended curriculum prepares students for the CALTPA Assessments to receive a California teaching license. This blended program allows 4 undergraduate courses to count towards the credential: Overview of Art Education, Educational Psychology, Curriculum Development and Integration of Technology. With only two additional semesters past BFA, students can receive the Credential. (Non Academy Art University BFA in Art Education can apply post B.A. to the 3 semesters Credential Program.)
