Art History (MA)

Graduate Liberal Arts<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Admission to the graduate program<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Students applying to the M.A. Art History program will have completed a Bachelor of Arts in Art History (or equivalent) or have completed a minimum of twelve (12) units (4 courses) in Art History. At least two of these undergraduate Art History courses must be at the upper-divisional level and must be passed with a C- grade or higher.&nbsp;<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: red;\">Applicants to the MA will also be required to submit a statement of intent, at least one academic letter of recommendation, and a writing sample on an art historical or related topic.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Applicants must submit TOEFL scores or official transcripts demonstrating they have attended an English platform institution for a minimum of 4 years at the high school level or higher. For acceptance to the MA in Art History program, the TOEFL score must be 80 or above.<\/p>\r\n<p>Applicants who do not meet the above criteria will be required to make up any deficiencies by enrolling in one to six Graduate School Preparatory classes to be determined by the department director.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"parbase section text\">\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"marged padded \">\r\n<div class=\"parbase section text\">\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"marged padded \"><strong>Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement<\/strong><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"marged padded \">&nbsp;<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"marged padded \">Students enrolled in the program are required to demonstrate reading proficiency in one European language (French, German, Italian or Spanish).<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"marged padded \">&nbsp;<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"marged padded \">The Foreign Language Proficiency requirement must be completed before the Midpoint Review is held. The Midpoint Review is traditionally completed during the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;semester or after having completed 18 credits of coursework.<br \/><br \/><strong>The Foreign Language component can be completed by either:<\/strong><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"parbase section table\">\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"columns \">\r\n<div data-aau=\"table\" data-type=\"table\">\r\n<div class=\"marged\">\r\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"1\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Completing 12 units of the chosen foreign language while enrolled in the MA*<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr class=\"even\">\r\n<td>Completing 12 units of the chosen foreign language at another institution and providing the transcripts to the department (<em>grades in the classes must be a C- or higher<\/em>)<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>Passing the proctored Foreign Language Proficiency translation exam in the language of your choice<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr class=\"even\">\r\n<td>*&nbsp;<em>language credits taken during the completion of the MA degree will not count as credits towards the MA in Art History degree.<\/em><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"parbase section text\">\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\"marged padded \">\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>The proctored foreign language proficiency exam is a 2-hour translation exam where the student will be asked to translate a 2-page translation in the chosen language. Students cannot use dictionaries or any other translation aid.
